Sport Clips Celebrates Women Entrepreneurs
Leading the Charge for Women Entrepreneurs in Franchising
In celebration of Women’s History Month, Sport Clips proudly shines a spotlight on Amanda Donovan, a dynamic woman who is making waves in the traditionally male-dominated world of franchising as a high-performing business owner and member of the Team Leader Advisory Council (TLAC). Amanda’s journey with Sport Clips began in 2012, when she and her husband decided to bring the brand to West Virginia, marking the start of an inspiring entrepreneurial venture.
Humble Beginnings
Amanda’s decision to pursue franchising with Sport Clips stemmed from a desire for flexibility and stability in her career, coupled with a strong belief in the brand’s values and proven systems. “We moved to a state where we didn’t have any family or support nearby,” she explains. “I wanted to have some flexibility in my schedule for when my husband was out of town for work. I was looking for an opportunity where I could follow a proven system.”
In addition, Sport Clips was a brand her family already saw the value in. “My husband wanted to get his haircut, but didn’t like the options we had in West Virginia, so he would wait until we traveled to go to a Sport Clips in another state,” she says.
From the outset, Amanda faced the challenge of owning and managing a business with no prior experience, as well as leading a team of individuals who were new to her. These hurdles were compounded by the fact that only 31% of franchise owners are women, highlighting the gender disparity in the franchising industry. However, she approached these challenges with determination and a willingness to learn. “I tried to be a sponge, I tried to listen, learn, and stay connected to our store,” she reflects. “It wasn’t easy, but I tried to stay true to myself, use my common sense, and trust my gut.”
Making a Difference in the Sport Clips Community
Amanda’s dedication and leadership skills have not gone unnoticed within the Sport Clips community. She was elected to represent her region on the Team Leader Advisory Council (TLAC), a role she describes as “an honor and a humbling experience.” The TLAC is comprised of Sport Clips franchise owners who act as a liaison to help develop and implement initiatives to benefit the entire Sport Clips organization. TLAC is made up of five Team Leaders from five different regions and two at-large members.
Through TLAC, Amanda has had the opportunity to collaborate with Sport Clips leadership and share insights from the field. “I truly believe the relationship between Sport Clips and TLAC is a wonderful commitment to ensuring the growth of our Team Leaders and the Sport Clips brand,” she says.
As a woman excelling in a male-dominated industry, Amanda emphasizes the importance of building strong relationships with her team members and fostering a supportive work environment. “We’ve been able to balance not only a wonderful working relationship, but they are my family,” she shares. “We laugh, cry, scream, and cheer together. I think being a female has allowed us to build these close bonds that allow us to celebrate the wins and work together on the challenges.” With dedication and integrity, Amanda proves that being a woman is no hurdle when it comes to business ownership, in fact it became a driving force in growing a team of dedicated people working together to build a community that values each other as much as profit potential.
“Women displaying their strengths in these key areas has contributed to many franchises shifting focus to shake up the traditional “boys’ club” and grow through franchising with women,” says a recent article from Forbes. “As the industry leans into having more female franchise owners, it continues to be apparent how complementary women and franchising are.”
Amanda’s advice for fellow Sport Clips franchise owners is rooted in the principles
of learning, supporting their teams, and prioritizing communication. “Make sure you have the right manager in place,” she advises. “Don’t always think about the bottom line, think about your team first. Be strong and resilient. Be a good student of your business and work hard. Invest in your team to ensure their personal and professional growth.”
Follow in Amanda’s Footsteps
Amanda Donovan’s journey with Sport Clips exemplifies the spirit of Women’s History Month – a celebration of resilience, determination, and achievement. Her accomplishments serve as an inspiration to women entrepreneurs everywhere, proving that with dedication, passion, and a supportive community, anything is possible.

New Sport Clips Franchise Team Members
Sport Clips Welcomes New Franchise Team Members
Sport Clips has announced it has brought on two professional team members to its already powerhouse corporate organization, passionate about helping our team leaders find growth in franchise ownership.
Ashley Whitlock started with Sport Clips in May 2022 as a Field Marketing Coordinator, organizing grand openings around the U.S. In Nov. 2022, Whitlock was promoted to Lead Generation Specialist, working with key suppliers to attract new franchisees.
“I can pinpoint the exact decision I made in college that led me to my current role,” Whitlock said. “I was introduced to Sport Clips my sophomore year of college, before I was even looking or even considering jobs after I graduated. I couldn’t be more grateful for this team that supported me before I was even a part of it. The culture is what made me join, and that same culture is what we show our Team Leaders.”
Andrea Rokovich began her Sport Clips career in the IT department as a Support Specialist in May 2016, and was quickly promoted to Project Coordinator in March 2017. Now, Rokovich has been promoted again to Franchise Administration Specialist, working with document production, brand excellence, and data management.
“The two reasons I love working for Sport Clips are, I love our company culture, and I love the opportunities Sport Clips affords us to give back to our community through their many philanthropic efforts,” she said. “I love my job because we are a team in every sense of the word. We encourage and support each other in daily activities, and rally together to ensure every project and initiative meets Sport Clips exceptional standards.”
Always Evolving
At Sport Clips, we are always supporting our team members, investing in their career growth and upward mobility, as well as giving them every opportunity to learn, advance and evolve in our company. Ever since Sport Clips was founded nearly 30 years ago, we’ve ingrained into our culture a mission that puts the future of our team members first. Everyone on the Sport Clips team is empowered, from the leadership team to Team Leaders to store managers and stylists, to find the most growth and meaning in their careers.
“In any business, the competitive advantage is the people that make up the organization,” says Gordon Logan, Founder of Sport Clips. “We’re looking for people with passion and people who love people. We’re looking for people who want to build teams and see their teams succeed. If we can attract the Team Leaders that focus on their teams, that’s the right fit. We believe success flows up.”
In turn, by making sure everyone in our entire organization feels appreciated and is given every opportunity to grow, Sport Clips has cultivated a company value with team members invested in the brand’s future.
“Culture is key,” says Julie Vargas, Vice President of Career Development & Team Member Engagement. “If you take care of your people, they will take care of you. It sounds so simple, but it’s so important. If you have happy stylists, they will go above and beyond for your customers. But just as importantly, if you take care of your people, they will stay with you, they will be loyal to you, and they will drive your success.”

New Franchise Location Built on Teamwork
Game On: How Two Families Joined Forces to Open Sport Clips Haircuts Newest Franchise Location
With close to 2,000 locations all over the U.S. and in Canada, Sport Clips Haircuts is one of the top-rated men’s hair franchises globally. As an investment opportunity, owning a Sport Clips franchise is a great diversifying tool for entrepreneurs seeking to build wealth. Two separate husband and wife teams, Jai Thar and Sweta Shah, and Varun and Chhavi Suri, were two such couples looking for their next venture in business when they met and went through the Sport Clips Discovery Days process. Today, they have joined forces and are on schedule to open the newest franchise location of Sport Clips Haircuts Franchise in Columbus, Ohio. The two couples, and their road to opening their franchise, are outstanding examples of the opportunity Sport Clips Haircuts gives to prospective franchisees.
From Corporate Workers to Franchise Owners
Long before the two couples met and decided to join the Sport Clips team, Jai worked in informational technology for Fortune 500 companies. Similarly, Varun Suri also held executive positions for many years, but as time went on, both couples decided the best way forward was to begin exploring possibilities for building a franchise while maintaining their current jobs.
“Our wives were actually instrumental in looking for ownership opportunities and diversifying our portfolio options,” Varun explained. “Both of us shared the vision that we didn’t want to reinvent the wheel when it came to building a business. We wanted to follow a successful model and use our skills to run the finances and the overall business. Investing in the Sport Clips’ franchise gave us the power to do just that.”
With both couples being savvy in their business experience, a lot of homework was done before purchasing the franchise. “We looked at a few options, but as we went through the immersive onboarding process, we found the information Sport Clips provided was very transparent,” Varun said. “They took the time to clarify expectations, and together we determined if we were the right fit for each other.”
Sold on Support
Both couples met with other Sport Clips Team Leaders (franchisees) and went to different Sport Clips stores to gain as much knowledge as possible about the brand. “Meeting with the entire Sport Clips team made the decision for me,” Jai said. “The support was outstanding.” The Sport Clips franchising model encompasses a complete and innovative launch process for new owners. The company has poured hours of time and resources into giving owners, stylists, and team members the most up-to-date and tech savvy training in the industry. So, when you join the Sport Clips family, you are really joining a team of champions who are ready to pour time and energy back right back into you.
“We saw the difference with our own eyes,” Varun explained. “The experience was so refreshing. Our wives loved the process, and they felt heard and listened to from the very beginning. When my wife learned that in the world of male grooming, owners could make a real impact in their communities and in the lives of those they employ, she said ‘game on.’”
Jai, Sweta, Varun and Chhavi will be game-ready when their franchise opens later this year. “We are so keen to get this going,” Varun said. The four franchise owners are at the finish line of their prep work and are eagerly awaiting the kick-off of their franchise investment later this year.

Sport Clips Haircuts National Huddle Celebrates Store Growth
A Commitment To Store Growth
Huddles aren’t just for the football field. For years, Sport Clips Haircuts has hosted an annual National Huddle to bring franchisees (Team Leaders) and their Team Members from across the country together to create a sense of teamwork, come up with innovative ideas, and work as a group toward problem solving. The 2022 Sport Clips Haircuts National Huddle theme was “Dare To Be” to challenge Team Leaders and Team Members to strive for greatness.
“The Sport Clips brand is strong, and the excitement for the future is even stronger. We were thrilled to have three thousand franchisees, stylists, support team members and supplier partners gathered in Nashville, with everyone focused on serving our clients as the pros in men’s hair,” says Edward Logan, Sport Clips CEO and president. “The Huddle theme of ‘Dare to Be’ is defined by our enhanced training for stylists, advancements in our technology to better serve our clients, and a renewed commitment to philanthropy to position Sport Clips.”
At the Huddle, Team Members discussed that 2022 was on track to have the highest number of store openings since 2018. Sport Clips is also the only national hair care provider, with more locations now than in 2019. It was also shown that new franchisees are coming from more diverse backgrounds than ever, with an increase in veteran franchisees since 2020 (who now represent 12% of the system). And, according to a client survey, Sport Clips ranked the highest out of any hair care brand as the one customers would recommend, with one of the best in-store experiences.

Is This The Year To Invest In The Hair Franchise Industry?
The Year of the Franchise
As millions of Americans reevaluated their career paths in the past few years and decided they want to control their own fate by running their own business, 2022 has truly become the year of the franchise, and for most, the best time to jump into the franchise industry.
Indeed, the COVID pandemic reversed a decades-long decline in the pace of entrepreneurship. According to a report in Vox, a record 5.4 million Americans applied for business IDs in 2021, with 2022 on track to surpass that number.
Even Forbes magazine reported that as many businesses struggled during the pandemic, franchises thrived. For so many Americans who wanted to run their own business, they chose the franchise model, which offers so many advantages, such as a proven operating strategy, strong backing support and brand awareness.
“After nearly two years of economic uncertainty, more and more people are following their entrepreneurial dreams and taking control of their destiny through business ownership,” Forbes wrote. “As a result, interest in franchising is reaching an unprecedented high, and 2022 is set to be a year of major franchise growth.”
Salon Franchise Industry is Booming
The hair care and beauty industry has seen this same remarkable growth in the past few years. In the U.S. alone, the hair and beauty industry generated $64 billion in revenue in 2018, with the 50 largest salons accounting for about 15% of sales.
According to a report Trafft, the market could hit $87 billion by 2023!
“The hair care and beauty industry is dynamic and continues to grow at a rapid pace,” Trafft reported. “Consumers are always looking for the latest trends and the best hair care products and services. Their needs are always changing. In order to meet these demands, the hair industry continues to develop and evolve.”
Why Invest In Sport Clips?
All over the country, our franchisees are reporting their customers are restless to get back in the barber chair and reconnect with the people who have cut their hair for years. That’s why we believe Sport Clips is truly poised for a banner year in business and growth in 2022 and beyond.
But don’t just take our word for it – Sport Clips is consistently one of the highest ranked hair franchises among franchise industry experts.
Franchise Rankings
Entrepreneur magazine ranked Sport Clips as the No. 24 best franchise to invest in for 2022 on its esteemed “Franchise 500” ranking, beating out hundreds of other franchises across a swath of other markets and industries. Entrepreneur highlighted the brand’s low initial investment costs, training & support program, recent growth, and ability for franchisees to scale up.
Top Franchise, one of the premier trackers in the franchise industry, also recently listed Sport Clips as one of the top 10 best haircut franchise businesses opportunities out there.
“For entrepreneurs looking to build a business, Sport Clips franchise is an easy-to-understand business model that’s simple to execute while offering something every guy needs,” Top Franchise wrote in its rankings. “Enjoy greater freedom and reach your personal and financial goals, growing a business on your terms that will always be in demand and has recurring revenue.”
Last but certainly not least, NerdWallet, the go-to spot for so many Americans and their business needs, recently reported Sport Clips was among the top hair salon franchises for 2022, pointing out Sport Clips has grown from about 50 stores in 1998 to now more than 1,800 locations across the U.S.
